Sound booth video drum test

We made a basic video entering a sound booth so you could witness the effect of Heavy Duty treatment.

Above is photo of the end walls of the booth showing recessed power light and ventilation control allowing flat packing for easy transport.

These options were special for this booth, since unusually, it has no window module. It is situated in a basement garage and there is no plan to use it with an external engineer or recording system.

We made this sound booth video because this installation has a really nice drum sound. We supplied the Heavy Duty walls dressed in red and black to complement the Afro-Cuban rhythm style which is the specialty of the owner.

Regular rehearsals

The band regularly uses the booth for rehearsals. Bass and guitar join the drums for a workout several times a week. The owner also uses the mini studio to record Podcasts for his real job as a Professor of music. This type of application perfectly suits the space. Anyone who has strained to hear words clearly from a you tube clip will appreciate the importance clarity and good audio.

The drummer comments in the video clip that the kit, inherited from a legendary Cuban drummer, sounds better acoustically that it had ever done before, by far. Coming from a highly respected musician this unexpected comment is praise indeed.

Audio balance

Getting a good tonal and acoustic balance between Cymbals, Toms, Kick and Snare with a hand held mic is unusual to say the least.

Why does the drummer have 12 mics and I only have one?

There are so many jokes about this – most of them start with ‘Why does the drummer have 12 mics and I only have one?’ Of course the experience of the player and the tuning of the kit do help a lot.

When I got the camera back to my studio the audio balance amazed me. Just using the built-in camera microphones recorded a video of the new sound booth I wanted to share.

However the ‘give’ of the suspended complex sandwich of varying density materials in the walls is what creates that luscious powerful sound that is not always so easy to capture even in large studios.

Wow
